WEST FARGO (May 17, 2024) – For the second consecutive week, persistent rains made for a wide open and tacky racing surface at Red River Valley Speedway for round two of the 2024 racing season. A monster field of 103 cars was checked in for action with both new and familiar faces visiting ChristianCarsOnline.com / Finley Motorsports Victory Lane.
Brennan Urbach was Friday night’s first-time winner as he scored his first career Red River Valley Speedway IMCA SportMod win. The FM Drain Cleaning Services feature began with Scott Jacobson taking the lead from the front row. Jacobson checked out from the rest of the field in the early going, while Jayden Pavlicek and Austin Veralrud ran second and third respectively. Near the midway point of the race, both Veralrud and a hard-charging Urbach moved by Pavlicek to secure spots inside the podium.
A caution with three to go for opening week winner, Ryan Restad, erased Jacobson’s lead and put the field on his back bumper. On the restart, Jacobson and Veralrud made contact in turn three, which pushed Jacobson into Brandon Ferris. The yellow flag flew and the contact resulted in Jacobson’s race ending early with damage to the right front. Veralrud was charged for the caution as Urbach, last week’s runner-up finisher, led Ferris and Torey Fischer to green for the two-lap dash to the checkers.
On the restart, Urbach, who started 11th, got the jump and easily cruised to the win. Fischer and Rich Pavlicek rounded out the top three. The win for Urbach was his first since making to move to a Wissota Midwest Mod/IMCA SportMod in 2017.
Another Jacobon led the early stages of the Skalicky’s Auto Repair IMCA Stock Car feature. Kelly Jacobson paced the field early, but Rick Schulz wheeled his way from eighth to take the lead from Jacobson on lap three.
Schulz was never seriously challenged throughout the remainder of the 20-lap event. Second place runner Derek Bernstien was gaining on Schulz mid-way through the race, but Schulz perfectly executed his way through traffic.
Schulz went on to take the checkers, his 31st at his home track, over Rob VanMIil and Bernstien.
Brandon Rekow jumped out to a commanding lead to start the 20-lap Superior Customs Signs & Wraps IMCA Sprint Car feature, but it was only a matter of time before defending track champion Andy Pake made his way up to the front.
Pake reeled in Rekow on lap five and made the pass for the lead. Pake then set sail and cruised to his eighth career win at Red River Valley and his 15th career IMCA Sprint Car win.
Tye Wilke withstood a strong challenge from Ryan Braseth in the closing laps of the Optima Realty Tony Paul INX Legend feature. The win was Wilke’s 34th at Red River Valley Speedway and his 26th in a Legend at the track.
Tanner Engen went back-to-back in the A Transmission City IMCA Hobby Stocks. After starting eighth on the grid, Engen wheeled his way forward to take the lead on lap two. Once out front, he never looked backed.
