Arneson Tops Season High Modified Car Count on Wednesday Night Special

Posted on July 28, 2016 by Administrator Posted in NEWS, Uncategorized

By Mike Spieker

WEST FARGO, ND (July 27) – Eighty-one race teams invaded Red River Valley Speedway for the first Wednesday night program since September 30, 2011 at the three-eighths mile dirt oval. Austin Arneson, Luke Johnson, Steven Kuntz and Billy Carou all visited KRJB 106.5FM Victory Lane.

Thirty-four IMCA Modifieds entered the Corwin, Charlie’s Philly Steaks, and Popeye’s Chickens-sponsored event, but the field was trimmed to the fastest 24 cars for the 25-lap Fredrikson & Byron
feature race.

The father-son duo of Todd and Jarrett Carter led them to the green flag, but Detroit Lakes, MN driver Michael Griffin came from inside row two to take the lead on the opening lap. Behind Griffin there was a four wide battle for second down the back straightaway, which was won by Billy Vogel.

Vogel chased down Griffin to take the lead on lap two and opened up a fairly comfortable lead over Griffin and Dave Shipley. Meanwhile, the man on the move was Austin Arneson in his U Motors #10. Arneson had wheeled his way from 11th to fourth in just three laps and found himself in second by lap five.

It didn’t take long for Arneson to track down Vogel’s 10 car length advantage. Arneson placed his successful bid for the lead while he and Vogel were in heavy lapped traffic with 13 circuits remaining. Once out front, Arneson cruised to the feature win over Vogel, Shipley, Griffin, and Cale Arneson.

The NDSCS INEX Legends feature began with a six-car battle for the point, which was ultimately won by Dean Julsrud. The Barnesville, MN driver led until Red River Kart Club graduate, Tim Estenson stole the lead with 10 to go. Farther back in the pack, 11th place starter Steven Kuntz was charging through the field as he passed four cars in one lap to move into second. The following circuit Kuntz drove by the #14T of Estenson and went on to lead the final five laps to score the victory.

It was another dominating performance by the driver of the #7C in the A Transmission City IMCA Hobby Stock division as Jamestown’s Billy Carou drove to yet another RRVS feature win. Carou started outside of the fourth row and took the lead away from Tim Church with six to go and held off a very fast Kasey Ussatis in the closing stages to pick up the victory.

The Eide Bailly IMCA Sport Mods had a wild finish with several cautions in the late stages. Luke Johnson stole the lead from Taylor Grove on lap three to take the lead as Jesse Skalicky slid into second from his 10th starting position.

Skalicky then set his sights on Johnson, but Skalicky just wasn’t quick enough to reel in the Corey’s Car Care #8J to challenge for the lead. A caution on the white flag lap changed all of that, however, as Skalicky lined up right behind Johnson with Scott Jacobson to his inside. Jacobson, who ran third on the grid, had rebounded after going to the tail of the field early for spinning out Johnson.

As the race resumed, Johnson and Skalicky raced hard into turn one, but once again Jacobson drove into the left rear of Johnson and spun him out. Jacobson was charged for his second caution and was sent to the trailer.

Another green-white-checkered finish ensued with Johnson running down low and Skalicky upstairs riding the rim. Johnson had the advantaged exiting turn two and went on to score his second RRVS win of the season.

Racing continues on August 12th as Steffes Auctioneers and the North Dakota Corn Growers Association present Friday night racing at Red River Valley Speedway, starting at 7pm.

RECAP: M&J Auto Parts/AllFinish Concrete Night at RRVS

Posted on July 25, 2016 by Administrator Posted in NEWS, Uncategorized

By Mike Spieker

WEST FARGO, ND (July 24) – Last Friday night Red River Valley Speedway was back in action with a full show of IMCA Modifieds, Sport Mods, Hobby Stocks and INEX Legends. A great field of 70 cars among four divisions packed the pit area on hot and humid night of racing, presented by M&J Auto Parts and All Finish Concrete. Dave Shipley, Jesse Skalicky and Billy Carou took home the Speedway Motors IMCA Weekly Racing checkered flags, while Josh Julsrud picked up the INEX Legends win.

Feature racing commenced with the 13-car A Transmission City IMCA Hobby Stocks/Pure Stocks main event. Hometown driver, Torey Fischer, started on the pole with Kristen Nelson to her outside, but it was third place starter Tim Church who fought his way to the front to lead lap one. Church quickly had his hands full with the #22 of Wade Moerke as they battled door to door down the back stretch with 10 to go. Church held on to the top spot, but three laps later he was again challenged, this time by Tim Shiek.

Shiek took the lead with Billy Carou and Moerke in tow as the top three cars distanced themselves by a half lap over the rest of the field. With six to go, Carou made the race winning move as he took the lead away from Shiek exiting turn four. Carou went on to pick up yet another RRVS feature win as Moerke, Shiek, Brad Orvedal and Nelson rounded out the top five.

Dylan Johnson and Josh Julsrud led the field of 15 NDSCS INEX Legends to the green flag. Johnson got the jump as the green flag waved and took a commanding lead out of turn two, but he was quickly surpassed by third place starter, Jerrett Julsrud. Jerrett’s stint at the point was a short one also as Sean Johnson took over the lead with 13 circuits remaining. The next lead change was the final one of the event as Barnesville’s Josh Julsrud went door to door with Sean Johnson with 12 to go. The two leaders battled for a complete lap around the high-banked Red River Valley Speedway before Julsrud cleared for the lead out of turn four.

Julsrud went on to lead the rest of the race, but had his hands full in the closing stages as Andrew Jochim challenged for the lead. Just as he did the previous night at Norman County Raceway, Julsrud picked up the win; his first at RRVS.

For the second time this season, Jesse Skalicky parked his #3S IMCA Sport Mod in KRJB 106.5FM Victory Lane. Skalicky started 10th in the 15-car Eide Bailly feature, but quickly made his way through the field. By lap five the Fargo, ND driver was up to second as he passed early race leader, Matt Talley. Skalicky then set his sights on Tyler McDougall, who was looking for his first RRVS feature win.

Lapped traffic is where the race was won as Skalicky reeled in McDougall and shot into the lead with just three laps remaining. McDougall got hung up in traffic, which is all Skalicky needed to capitalize and claim his second win of the season at RRVS.

The Fredrikson & Byron (P.A.) IMCA Modifieds were 27 cars strong for their 25 lap main event. 2015 IMCA National Rookie of the Year, Rob VanMil, started on the pole with West Fargo’s Ryan Dahl to his outside. VanMil grabbed the lead on the opening lap as Dahl, Dave Shipley, Todd Carter, and Jason Strand filed in behind.

By lap seven the leaders were already in lapped traffic, which allowed Shipley to close in on VanMil. Shipley went to the low side of the speedway in his Dakota Cat #72, while VanMil utilized the high line. The two veteran drivers raced side by side for the lead for two laps before Shipley powered by down low to take the lead. VanMil battled back and was right on the heels of Shipley, but couldn’t muster up enough speed to regain the lead. Shipley went on to take the checkers and claim a spot in this year’s Dash at the Clash during the Harris Clash at Hamilton County Speedway in Marshalltown, IA.

Zomer and Strand Highlight Unforgettable Night at RRVS

Posted on July 18, 2016 by Administrator Posted in NEWS, Uncategorized

By Mike Spieker

WEST FARGO, ND (July 19th) – It was the night we have all been waiting for. It was the night we’ve had circled on our calendars since the 2016 Red River Valley Speedway (RRVS) schedule came in out February. It was the night where the upper Midwest’s two biggest touring series would come together for the first time in RRVS history.

And it was everything we’d hoped it would be; and more!

An estimated 4,500 race fans came out to RRVS Sunday evening for the NOSA Sprint Car/NLRA Late Model special, presented by Buffalo Wild Wings and the Red River Valley Fair. A RRVS record 33 NOSA Sprints and 29 NLRA Late Models packed the pit area, along with 17 IMCA Hobby Stocks/Pure Stocks. Dusty Zomer, Dustin Strand, and Kasey Ussatis all visited KRJB 106.5FM Victory Lane.

The event brought in the area’s biggest names in racing, including seven-time and defending World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car champion, Donny Schatz, who had won the $50,000 Kings Royal at Eldora Speedway less than 18 hours prior.

The field of 33 Sprint Cars was trimmed to the fastest 24 for the 25-lap A-main. Minot’s Greg Nikitenko grabbed the early lead over 20-year-old pilot Jordan Adams as Thomas Kennedy and Wade Nygaard raced for third. Three laps in, Kennedy and Nygaard made contact in turn four, which sent Nygaard spinning to a stop bringing out the yellow. Nygaard was sent to the tail of the field, but still rallied to finish in fifth.

Nikitenko led the first half of the race as Adams, Kennedy and Lee Grosz raced for second through fourth, but with 11 to go Sioux Falls, SD driver Dusty Zomer came on strong to challenge Nikitenko. Zomer drove his Buffalo Wild Wings #82 to the low side of turn one and completed a slide job on Nikitenko to take the lead.

Once out front, Zomer built up a lead he would not relinquish as he went on to claim his first-ever RRVS win and sixth career NOSA victory, putting him 15th on the all-time wins list.
Prior the 2016 season at RRVS, Dustin Strand had claimed the last checkered flag ever waved at the 3/8th mile oval when the track saw its last race to date on August 25, 2012. Since then a lot has changed at RRVS, but Strand still knows how to find victory lane.

Strand started outside of the front row and took off as soon as the green flag waved. Within four laps, the two-time and defending NLRA champion had amassed a full straightaway lead over current series point leader, Brad Seng. Seng closed in slightly in lapped traffic, but was never able to mount a serious threat on Strand. Strand went on to take the victory; his second in a Late Model and third overall on the RRVS 3/8th mile configuration.

The A Transmission City IMCA Hobby Stocks/Pure Stocks had a wild main event. It all started with a four car pileup on lap two, which brought the race to its first caution. The destruction continued on the restart when Dan Dowling and Billy Carou were fighting hard for the lead. Dowling’s #5X snapped around on him in turn four and he was met head on by Austin Veralrud, who then was collected by Brad Orvedal. Veralrud’s #6 burst into flames, but the West Fargo Fire Crew was quick to the scene to extinguish the flames.

Kasey Ussatis and Carou then put on a great show as the battled for the lead. Ussatis cleared the #7C of Carou with three laps to go to take the win.

Racing continues this Friday night, presented by M&J Auto Parts and All Finish Concrete. Green flag flies at 7pm!

Schill Victorious In Front Of Hometown Crowd

Posted on June 29, 2016 by Administrator Posted in NEWS, Uncategorized

By Mike Spieker

WEST FARGO, ND (June 24) – For the first time since August 25th, 2012, the WISSOTA PolyDome Dirt Track Series was back in action at Red River Valley Speedway. A total of 96 cars were signed in to compete in front of an estimated season high of 1,200 fans. Cole Schill and Brian Bernotas took the WISSOTA wins, while Rob VanMil, Luke Johnson, and Tim Church took the Speedway Motors IMCA Weekly Racing victories.

Twenty-five WISSOTA/NLRA Late Models made up the starting grid for their 25-lap main event. Schill and Allen Kent led the field to the green and they battled door to door into turn one. Schill came away with the advantage, but Kent hung tough on the outside for the first three circuits. Schill finally cleared the Minot, ND runner in turn one and drove out to a comfortable lead.

The first and only caution was displayed on lap seven as Kent and Shane Edginton lined up right behind Schill for the restart. Edginton took off on the restart as he took second from Kent and looked for the lead in turn three. However, Schill fended off the charge as he rode the low side of the speedway.

Meanwhile, Brad Seng and Dustin Strand were on the move. The two Grand Forks drivers each gained 10 positions in the first nine laps from their 15th and 18th starting spots, respectively. At the halfway point, Seng got a huge run off the top of turn two and propelled himself from fifth to third in one lap. The current NLRA point leader then set his sights on the Performance Auto #4 of Edginton. With seven to go, Seng made the pass for second and it looked as though he would have enough time to catch Schill. But Schill made some key moves in lapped traffic that sealed the deal as he came to the checkers with the crowd on its feet, cheering on their hometown driver.

Seng finished second as Don Shaw came from 12th to third. Edginton and Zach Naastad rounded out the top five, while Dustin Strand wheeled is way from 18th to sixth.

Joe Pellman led the opening lap Fargo Force WISSOTA Super Stock main event. Pellman was overtaken by Jeff Crouse on lap two, but Crouse too was quickly passed for the lead by Brain Bernotas on lap three. Numerous cautions plagued the event, but Bernotas was able to take off each and every time to protect the lead. Bernotas took his fourth career win at the 3/8th mile oval over “Wild Bill” Wadeson, Pellman, Tim Compson, and Al Cleveland.

The IMCA Modifieds were 30 cars strong for their 25-lap main event. After a five wide fight for the lead on the opening lap, all signs pointed to back to back wins for Michael Greseth as he came from seventh to the lead in just two laps. From there Greseth opened up a whopping nine second lead over Rob VanMil and Dev Malmlov, but a caution with two laps to go changed everything. Under caution Greseth lost the drive shaft just as the caution lights went out for the green-white-checkered restart. VanMil then inherited the lead and held off Michael Johnson, who started back in 16th, as John Corell, Rich Pavlicek, and Dev Malmlov rounded out the top five. Greseth was scored a heart-breaking 17th. Jason Strand was the hard charger of the race, advancing from 28th to eighth.

Luke Johnson held off Robby Rosselli in the final laps of the IMCA Sport Mod feature. Moohead, MN driver took the lead with a three wide pass on the opening lap and led every circuit, but took the win by a mere 0.360 seconds.

Fifty-one year old IMCA Hobby Stock rookie, Tim Church led every lap of the A City Transmission main event. Church took his second win of the season over Brandon Schmidt, Billy Carou, Brad Orvedal, and Keith McCleary.

The next race at Red River Valley Speedway will come Sunday, July 17th as the NOSA Sprint Cars and NLRA Late Models team up for a Red River Valley Fair special event. The $10 fair gate admission gets fans into the races for free.
