Braseth Blasts to Dirt Nationals Championship

Posted on October 1, 2017 by Administrator Posted in Uncategorized

By Jacob Pommerer

West Fargo – Ryan Braseth outlasted two pre-race favorites to earn one of four INEX Legend Dirt Nationals Championships handed out Saturday night at the Red River Valley Speedway.

Ryan Braseth

Front row starters Ty Wilke and Cole Klein looked to be the two cars to beat early in the Young Lions division main event. Klein grabbed the early lead with Wilke hot on his heels. On lap five Wilke found a way to take the lead away from Klein. However, just a few laps later Wilke spun in front of the field bring out the caution and putting Wilke to the back of the pack. On the restart Ryan Braseth inherited the lead from Wilke. Braseth tried to pull away from the field however in the closing laps Wilke worked his way from the back of the pack to Braseth’s back bumper. Braseth however would hold off the hard charging Wilke to win the Young Lions Dirt Nationals Championship.

Austin Wiest

The second feature to hit the track was the Semi-Pro Legends. Front row starters Tim Estenson and Jackson Lewis raced hard in the opening laps for the lead. On lap two Estenson spun which brought out a yellow and put Estenson to the back of the pack. On the restart Lewis pulled away from the pack as Estenson worked his way towards the front from the back of the pack. Within ten laps Estenson found his way back up to second right on Lewis bumper. Lewis and Estenson battled side by side for the lead, neither driver giving an inch some contact was made between the two leaders. Under an ensuing caution both drivers were black flagged for rough driving. As a result, Mason Chaney took over the lead. Chaney, Dylan Johnson, Duantae Martin put on a great race for the lead, this allowed Austin Wiest to close in on the leaders. With only a handful of laps remaining Wiest worked his way into third and put his car on the top of the speedway in pursuit of Johnson and Martin. Wiest found enough speed to pass both Martin and Johnson and take the lead and the eventual win.

Dave Comer

Dave Comer left the fans with no doubt who was the fastest lNEX legend in the Masters division was. Comer started the 30-lap main event on the pole and was never challenged during the feature event to earn a Dirt Nationals Championship.

Glen Arnold

Dave’s son Justin Comer paced the field early in the Pro Legends main event. Comer received heavy pressure from Andrew Jochim in the races early stages. Glen Arnold who started 13th on the field and Baiden Heskett made it a four-car race for the lead. Arnold found his way through traffic and was able to pass Comer for the lead and the win.

Jake Hagemann looked to picked up his second win of the weekend in the IMCA Sport Mods. Hagemann used his front row starting spot to jump out to the early race lead. Meanwhile Kelly Jacobson moved from seventh up to second. A restart at the halfway point would be exactly what Jacobson needed. As Hagemann worked the top side of the speedway as Jacobson ran right around the tires on the bottom and took the lead. Jacobson pulled away from the field in the closing laps to pick up the win.

Rick Shultz led the opening lap on the IMCA Stock Car feature. Fifth place started Shane Laske wasted no time moving up to second and racing Shultz for the lead. Laske and Schultz swapped the lead numerous times before Laske was able to get the upper hand and go on to grab the win.

Bryce Borgen

Bryce Borgen led every lap of the IMCA Modified feature, however it was not without a fight from sixth place starter Tyler Peterson. Peterson moved from sixth to second in the opening lap and tried to run down Borgen. Peterson was able to pull alongside Borgen on numerous occasion just never having enough speed to make the pass.

INEX Dirt Nationals highlight season finale at Red River Valley Speedway

Posted on September 28, 2017 by Administrator Posted in NEWS

By Mike Spieker

WEST FARGO – For the first time ever, Red River Valley Speedway will play host to the INEX Dirt Nationals this Friday and Saturday night. The event for the INEX legends division is the first of a series of three national events, which also cover the Asphalt Nationals at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and the Road Course Nationals near Atlanta.

The country’s top talent is expected to be on display both nights at the Red River Valley Fairgrounds. In turn, the track is gearing up for a record-breaking INEX legend car count.

“It’s taken a lot of work to get to this point. Jake and Sharnel (Bitker) and I are really excited to host this event in just our second year operating the race track,” said Red River Valley Speedway co-promoter Nick Skalicky.

Friday’s program will consist of time trials and two sets of heat races for the INEX legends, with the consolation races and championship main events taking place on Saturday.

“For our weekly shows, all of our legends drivers race together. But for this national event, they are placed into their respective classes and complete against their same age group and talent level,” Skalicky continued. “It’ll be pretty neat to see how our guys stack up against other drivers from around the country.”

While drivers from several states and even Australia will be in attendance this weekend, the drivers to watch out for may be Red River Valley Speedway’s own weekly competitors.

Tim Estenson stands in victory lane at Red River Valley Speedway after picking up one of his 23 wins of 2017
Tim Estenson drives down the back straightaway at Red River Valley Speedway in his No. 14 legend.

Fifteen-year-old Fargo driver, Tim Estenson, has been dominating the INEX legends division all season long at all three area weekly F-M dirt tracks. Estenson claimed track championships at Red River Valley Speedway, Buffalo River Race Park in Glyndon, Minn. and Norman County Raceway in Ada, Minn.

“It’ll be interesting to see how fast everybody is and what I can learn from them during the practice session,” said Estenson. “Even though we have the home track advantage, we just want to lay back and not let everybody see what we can do until we go racing on Friday.”

The third-year legends driver has amassed 23 wins thus far in 2017. He enters the biggest event of the year this weekend riding a three-race win streak at two of the area’s biggest races. Estenson swept the Corn Cob Nationals at Buffalo River Race Park two weeks ago, before becoming Jamestown Speedway’s first-ever Stock Car Stampede champion in the INEX legends division.

“I’m not going into this weekend looking to extend that streak. I’m just like any other driver trying to be just as competitive as everybody else. I try to take things one race at a time and go for the win if I can.”

Even though Estenson has been racing multiple times a week, every week, since early May, preparation for this event began back around late July-early August.

“We’ve been preparing for this race for a couple months now,” he said. “Going over setups and using different weights on the car and different tire measurements. We’ve been working hard to make sure our car is just as good as everybody else’s so we can get up to the front.”

Estenson currently leads the Semi-Pro Dirt national points standings.

Tye Wilke of Detroit Lakes, Minn. will be another driver to watch out for. Wilke currently leads the Young Lion Dirt national point standings in just his second year behind the wheel of an INEX legend car.

While the INEX legends will be highlighted this weekend, Red River Valley Speedway will be putting on a full racing program each night. The IMCA sportmods, IMCA hobby stocks, and WISSOTA super stocks will be taking the high-banked, three-eighths mile clay oval as well on Friday.

On Saturday, the IMCA modifieds return for their final appearance of 2017, along with the IMCA sportmods and IMCA stock cars.

Racing will be starting an hour earlier than the weekly summer shows, with the green flag dropping at 6p.m.

Arneson Finds Victory Lane Friday Night at Red River Valley Speedway

Posted on May 27, 2017 by Administrator Posted in NEWS

By Mike Spieker

WEST FARGO – Many race fans left Red River Valley Speedway after Thursday night’s ‘Dakota Cat 100’ event thinking Austin Arneson won the night’s 42-lap IMCA Modified feature. However, Arneson came up 25 pounds light at the scales, forcing an automatic disqualification. That handed the win over to Austin’s brother, Cale, who followed Austin to the checkered flag.

That only fueled Austin’s drive to win even more on Friday night.

The Fargo native led the final 27 laps in a dominating performance to win the second and final night of the inaugural ‘Dakota Cat 100.’

With 12 laps in the books, it quickly became another battle between the Arneson brothers for the win as Cale led Austin.

On lap 15, Austin got a run on Cale and stole the point before opening a sizable lead.

With 23 laps to go, a caution reset the field, which allowed last Friday’s winner, Michael Greseth, to move into the runner-up spot. Greseth set his sights on the No. 10 of Arneson, but Arneson was too strong as he pulled away by four seconds in the closing laps.

Arneson was unchallenged on the final lap as he took his second RRVS win of the season.

“The track was [in the best condition] we’ve seen in a long time. Hats off to Jake and Sharnel [Bitker] and Nick [Skalicky],” said Arneson in victory lane. “The track was really technical tonight. It was slow and you had to hit your marks. We are still fine tuning on some things to make [the car] better.”

Luke Johnson edged out Dan Dowling in the final laps of the IMCA Sport Mod feature. However, Johnson and Dowling were both disqualified following post-race inspection. That gave Jesse Skalicky his fourth RRVS win of 2017.

Duffy Froemke held off Rick Schulz in a thrilling green-white-checkered finish during the IMCA stock car feature. The win was Froemke’s second of the year at the West Fargo three-eighths mile dirt oval.

Scotty Richardson picked up a popular win in the INEX Legends, while Tim Shiek was victorious in IMCA Hobby Stock action.

Racing continues next Friday night at Red River Valley Speedway, starting at 7pm.

DQ Hands Cale Arneson first RRVS Modified Win

Posted on May 26, 2017 by Administrator Posted in NEWS

WEST FARGO – Many race fans left Red River Valley Speedway Thursday night thinking Austin Arneson won the night’s 42 lap IMCA Modified feature. However, Arnesen came up 25 pounds light at the scales. That handed the win over to Austin’s brother, Cale, who followed Austin to the checkered flag.

Last Friday’s winner, Michael Greseth of Harwood, jumped out to the early lead as the green flag waved on the Modified feature. Greseth looked to have the car to beat in the first handful of laps before he was forced to retire from the event prematurely with mechanical issues.

That gave the lead to Johnny Scott. Once assuming the lead, the New Mexico driver checked out from the field and seemed to have the race in hand.

With six laps remaining and a full straightaway lead over Austin Arneson, Scott also suffered a catastrophic failure as a broken j-bar forced him pitside.

“We didn’t have the fastest car tonight,” said Austin Arneson after the race in victory lane. “We’ve been testing on the setup here as of late and we were just too tight tonight. Johnny [Scott] is a good friend of ours and that’s a heck of a tough way to lose a race.”

The night was dedicated to injured Fargo driver Mike Bruns, Sr., who traveled with Arneson as a crew member for several years.

“This is Mike Bruns’ race and he’s a great family friend,” Arneson said. “He was on the road with us for the last five seasons and every big race I’ve won he has been side by side with me.”

A benefit was held for Bruns during the intermission and Austin Arneson offered to add to that total by donating all of his winnings before knowing he would later be DQ’d.

For Cale, the win was his first in IMCA Modified action at RRVS

Chris VanMil backed up his win at Buffalo River Race Park’s season opener and claimed the IMCA Sport Mod feature race. .

Brandon Schmidt went back-to-back in the IMCA hobby stock as he visited KRJB Victory Lane in his No. 219 machine. Fifteen-year-old Tim Estenson, who flipped his INEX legend last Friday night, rebounded to score his fourth win of the season.

Kelly Jacobson grabbed his first career IMCA stock car win by holding off Minot’s Scott Yale on the final lap.

Racing continues Friday night at Red River Valley Speedway for the final night of the Dakota Cat 100.

Schill Victorious In Front Of Hometown Crowd

Posted on June 29, 2016 by Administrator Posted in NEWS, Uncategorized

By Mike Spieker

WEST FARGO, ND (June 24) – For the first time since August 25th, 2012, the WISSOTA PolyDome Dirt Track Series was back in action at Red River Valley Speedway. A total of 96 cars were signed in to compete in front of an estimated season high of 1,200 fans. Cole Schill and Brian Bernotas took the WISSOTA wins, while Rob VanMil, Luke Johnson, and Tim Church took the Speedway Motors IMCA Weekly Racing victories.

Twenty-five WISSOTA/NLRA Late Models made up the starting grid for their 25-lap main event. Schill and Allen Kent led the field to the green and they battled door to door into turn one. Schill came away with the advantage, but Kent hung tough on the outside for the first three circuits. Schill finally cleared the Minot, ND runner in turn one and drove out to a comfortable lead.

The first and only caution was displayed on lap seven as Kent and Shane Edginton lined up right behind Schill for the restart. Edginton took off on the restart as he took second from Kent and looked for the lead in turn three. However, Schill fended off the charge as he rode the low side of the speedway.

Meanwhile, Brad Seng and Dustin Strand were on the move. The two Grand Forks drivers each gained 10 positions in the first nine laps from their 15th and 18th starting spots, respectively. At the halfway point, Seng got a huge run off the top of turn two and propelled himself from fifth to third in one lap. The current NLRA point leader then set his sights on the Performance Auto #4 of Edginton. With seven to go, Seng made the pass for second and it looked as though he would have enough time to catch Schill. But Schill made some key moves in lapped traffic that sealed the deal as he came to the checkers with the crowd on its feet, cheering on their hometown driver.

Seng finished second as Don Shaw came from 12th to third. Edginton and Zach Naastad rounded out the top five, while Dustin Strand wheeled is way from 18th to sixth.

Joe Pellman led the opening lap Fargo Force WISSOTA Super Stock main event. Pellman was overtaken by Jeff Crouse on lap two, but Crouse too was quickly passed for the lead by Brain Bernotas on lap three. Numerous cautions plagued the event, but Bernotas was able to take off each and every time to protect the lead. Bernotas took his fourth career win at the 3/8th mile oval over “Wild Bill” Wadeson, Pellman, Tim Compson, and Al Cleveland.

The IMCA Modifieds were 30 cars strong for their 25-lap main event. After a five wide fight for the lead on the opening lap, all signs pointed to back to back wins for Michael Greseth as he came from seventh to the lead in just two laps. From there Greseth opened up a whopping nine second lead over Rob VanMil and Dev Malmlov, but a caution with two laps to go changed everything. Under caution Greseth lost the drive shaft just as the caution lights went out for the green-white-checkered restart. VanMil then inherited the lead and held off Michael Johnson, who started back in 16th, as John Corell, Rich Pavlicek, and Dev Malmlov rounded out the top five. Greseth was scored a heart-breaking 17th. Jason Strand was the hard charger of the race, advancing from 28th to eighth.

Luke Johnson held off Robby Rosselli in the final laps of the IMCA Sport Mod feature. Moohead, MN driver took the lead with a three wide pass on the opening lap and led every circuit, but took the win by a mere 0.360 seconds.

Fifty-one year old IMCA Hobby Stock rookie, Tim Church led every lap of the A City Transmission main event. Church took his second win of the season over Brandon Schmidt, Billy Carou, Brad Orvedal, and Keith McCleary.

The next race at Red River Valley Speedway will come Sunday, July 17th as the NOSA Sprint Cars and NLRA Late Models team up for a Red River Valley Fair special event. The $10 fair gate admission gets fans into the races for free.
